Nocturnal flight call recording

Led by Occidental College

Starting the first of every March and ending in June, a recording system is deployed to capture the nocturnal flight calls of birds flying over the Gottlieb Native Garden. Once recorded, the clips are converted into spectrograms and analyzed for species identification.

Each spring, millions of birds migrate along the Pacific Flyway, part of which passes directly through Los Angeles County. Many species travel at night and vocalize as they fly. There may be many reasons why they do this, one would be to stay in contact with other birds they are migrating with.
