The Gottlieb Native Garden

a california love story

The Gottlieb Native Garden is a flourishing ecosystem belonging to Susan and Dan Gottlieb, friends of flora and fauna and devoted environmental philanthropists. With more than 100 hand-selected plant species and hundreds of animal species, the backyard is a National Wildlife Federation-certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat and a Xerces Society-designated Pollinator Habitat.

Built for Speed

Cooper’s hawks are bird hunters and occur frequently in the GNG. These hawks rely entirely on speed and surprise in their pursuit of a meal and are usually seen only after an unsuccessful attack.  Many people are not thrilled to find this hawk in their garden, but a Cooper’s hawks success rate of capturing prey is quite low and the odds of them surviving into adulthood is even lower. We can accept a bird being taken out of the garden every once in a while - this is just nature keeping everything in balance.
